Where Memories Lie by Deborah Crombie
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
Gemma's somewhat secretive friend Erika asks her to investigate how a long-missing family heirloom winds up in a prestigious London auction house. The murder of an auction house employee is obviously connected, but how does the murder and the brooch connect to the post-war suicide of Erika's husband? Gemma and Duncan work together to fit the pieces of the puzzle together. This was terrific! I spent the better part of a day reading this from cover to cover. And a spoiler alert for those of you who are reading the series: Gemma finally comes to a decision!

Book #74
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
In this second installment of the this series, Inspector Ian Rutledge is sent to Cornwall to reopen the investigation into three sudden deaths in one family by his jealous supervisor. Rutledge is still struggling with his PTSD and is still hearing the voice of the private he condemned to death for cowardice during WWI. Were the deceased victims of a murderer? Or were their deaths just more in a series of tragedies? Rutledge wrestles not only with his own demons, but with the demons that seem to surround the Trevelyan family. This was a gripping psychological puzzle, and I was really drawn into it. Charles Todd (a mother/son team) crafts a detailed picture of the time period and creates a compelling atmosphere. These are not light-hearted books, and they are not easy, escapist reads. But they are good!
