Book Review #102 Jane Austen Book Club

The Jane Austen Book Club The Jane Austen Book Club by Karen Joy Fowler

I was disappointed in this book.  I never really connected with any of the characters.   If the book's organization was intended to link each character's story with one of Austen's novels, it didn't succeed.  It wasn't an awful book, but it wasn't particularly engaging or thoughtful.  I did find the chronological reviews of Austen's work at the end of the novel fascinating.  To see how  opinions of her work have evolved and changed over the years since their original publication was fascinating!

I did not read the book, and I probably won't after seeing the movie. As a teacher, I found the treatment of one of the story lines completely upsetting. I rather resented Jane Austen being used to provide "understanding" for someone who was behaving in that fashion with a student. Of course, things may have come across entirely differently in the book.

I haven't seen the movie but I suspect that one of the story lines was changed for the movie!

I agree on all counts. I thought it was a fun idea for a book, but really did nothing for me. Well, I was interested in the Rhodesian Ridgebacks...but that was about it.
